Laxsgiik

Laxsgiik is a term originating from the Tsimshian language, spoken by the Tsimshian people of northwestern British Columbia, Canada, and southeastern Alaska, United States. It refers to one of the four primary phratries, or social divisions, within Tsimshian society. These phratries are matrilineal, meaning that membership is inherited through the mother's line.

The Laxsgiik phratry is often associated with the eagle. Members of this phratry traditionally hold rights to specific crests, territories, and names, reflecting their ancestral connections and social standing. Marriages within the same phratry are generally prohibited to maintain social and genetic diversity. The Laxsgiik, along with the other phratries (Ganhada [Raven], Gispwudwada [Orca/Killer Whale], and Laxsgiik [Eagle]), plays a crucial role in the social structure, governance, and ceremonial life of the Tsimshian people. The phratry system governs inheritance, marriage practices, and reciprocal obligations, ensuring balance and cooperation within the community.
