Chapter (Navajo Nation)
A Chapter is the basic unit of local government and community organization within the Navajo Nation. Chapters serve as a bridge between the Navajo Nation government and individual Navajo communities. They are responsible for a variety of functions, including community planning, infrastructure development, economic development, and administering certain local services.
Chapters typically have a Chapter House, which serves as a meeting place and administrative center. Each Chapter elects its own Chapter officials, including a Chapter President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer, who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Chapter.
The powers and responsibilities of Chapters are defined by Navajo Nation law and are subject to change by the Navajo Nation Council. Chapters play a critical role in preserving Navajo culture and traditions and in addressing the unique challenges facing Navajo communities. The number of Chapters varies slightly over time but generally numbers around 110 across the Navajo Nation's vast territory, spanning parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Chapters differ greatly in population, resources, and geographical size.
