Central Area Command (RAAF)

Central Area Command (RAAF) was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) command active during World War II. It was responsible for the air defence and air operations in the central regions of Australia, encompassing South Australia, most of Victoria, and parts of New South Wales. Established in 1942, Central Area Command's primary duties included protecting vital infrastructure, providing air support for land forces, and conducting anti-submarine patrols. It also oversaw the training of aircrew and the maintenance of airfields within its designated area.

The Command's headquarters were located in Melbourne. Units under its control included fighter squadrons, bomber squadrons, and maritime patrol squadrons. Key operational activities included intercepting enemy aircraft, particularly Japanese reconnaissance planes, and coordinating with other RAAF commands to counter potential threats to Australia's mainland. As the war progressed and the threat to Australia diminished, Central Area Command's role gradually shifted towards training and support. Following the end of World War II, the command was eventually disbanded, its responsibilities being absorbed into other RAAF commands.
