Cathedral of the Intercession (Shakhty)
The Cathedral of the Intercession is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in the city of Shakhty, Rostov Oblast, Russia. It serves as the main church for the Shakhty Diocese.
Construction of the cathedral began in 2006 and was completed and consecrated in 2016. The architectural style is largely traditional Russian Revival, featuring a prominent dome and bell tower. The cathedral is dedicated to the Intercession of the Theotokos, a significant feast day in the Orthodox Christian tradition commemorating the Virgin Mary's protection and intercession for believers.
The cathedral plays a significant role in the religious life of Shakhty, serving as a center for worship, religious education, and community activities for Orthodox Christians in the region. It replaced a smaller, previously existing church which also carried the name "Church of the Intercession." The new cathedral’s size and grandeur reflect the growth of the Orthodox community in Shakhty and the importance of the faith in the local culture. The cathedral hosts regular liturgical services, including Divine Liturgy, and is a destination for pilgrims and tourists interested in religious architecture and Russian Orthodox history.
