Iwate 1st district (1947–1993)

The Iwate 1st district was a multi-member electoral district in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, used for elections to the House of Representatives from 1947 to 1993. It was established under the 1947 constitution and electoral law, which replaced the previous large, single non-transferable vote districts with smaller, multi-member districts. These districts typically elected 3-5 representatives.

Prior to 1947, the area was part of a larger prefectural-wide district. The Iwate 1st district encompassed the central and coastal portions of Iwate Prefecture.

The electoral system used during this period allowed voters to cast a single vote for one candidate. The candidates with the highest number of votes were elected, up to the district's designated number of representatives. This system often led to intra-party competition, as candidates from the same party vied for voter support.

Significant political figures elected from the Iwate 1st district during this period included members of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Japan Socialist Party (JSP), and occasionally, candidates from other smaller parties or independents. The specific political landscape and the dominant parties varied throughout the years depending on broader national trends and local factors.

In 1994, Japan underwent significant electoral reform, replacing the multi-member district system with a combination of single-member districts and proportional representation. As a result, the Iwate 1st district (1947-1993) was abolished and replaced with smaller single-member districts and a proportional representation block. The area formerly covered by the Iwate 1st district was largely divided among several new single-member constituencies.
