167th (Canadien-Français) Battalion, CEF

The 167th (Canadien-Français) Battalion, CEF was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. Authorized on December 22, 1915, the battalion was raised in Military District No. 4, primarily from the province of Quebec. Recruiting began in Montreal and surrounding areas with the intention of creating a unit composed primarily of French-Canadians.

The battalion was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Hubert-René Dufresne and embarked for Great Britain on April 28, 1917, aboard the SS Missanabie. Upon arrival in England, the 167th was initially stationed at Bramshott Camp.

On May 10, 1917, the battalion was absorbed into the 23rd Reserve Battalion, effectively ceasing to exist as an independent unit. The personnel of the 167th (Canadien-Français) Battalion were then used as reinforcements for other French-Canadian units already serving in the field, such as the 22nd (Canadien-Français) Battalion.

The 167th (Canadien-Français) Battalion, CEF is perpetuated by Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal.
