Bringing Up Father (radio)
Bringing Up Father was a radio comedy series based on the popular comic strip of the same name created by George McManus. The radio show aired on various networks from 1939 to 1954, though its exact broadcast history is somewhat fragmented and details can vary depending on sources.
The program revolved around the nouveau riche Maggie and Jiggs, as they navigated (or more often, struggled with) their newfound wealth. Maggie was often portrayed as attempting to climb the social ladder and integrate with high society, while Jiggs, a former bricklayer, preferred his corned beef and cabbage and the company of his old working-class friends. The humor stemmed from the cultural clashes and marital squabbles that arose from their differing desires and backgrounds.
Several actors portrayed Jiggs and Maggie over the years. Early versions featured Arthur Lake (of Blondie radio fame) as Jiggs, though the role was later taken over by other performers. The role of Maggie was also filled by various actresses throughout the series' run.
Bringing Up Father relied heavily on slapstick, domestic humor, and stereotypical representations of Irish-Americans (particularly Jiggs). While popular in its time, the show's humor may be considered dated by modern standards. Episodes are available in some collections of old-time radio programs.
