Borimsa

Borimsa is a Korean Buddhist temple located on 가지산 (Gajisan Mountain) in Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. It is considered one of the Eight Great Temples of Zen Buddhism (선, Seon) in Korea.

Borimsa was originally established during the Silla Dynasty in 860 CE by the monk Chejing (體澄). The temple is particularly significant due to its connection to the 가지산문 (Gajisanmun), one of the Nine Mountains of Korean Seon Buddhism. Chejing is considered the founder of the Gajisanmun school of Seon.

Over its history, Borimsa has undergone several renovations and expansions. The temple grounds contain various structures, including the main Buddha hall (대웅전, Daeungjeon), a lecture hall, monks' quarters, and pagodas. Notable artifacts and cultural properties are preserved within the temple, contributing to its historical and religious significance.

Borimsa continues to be an active center for Buddhist practice and study, attracting monks and lay practitioners alike. It plays an important role in preserving and promoting Korean Buddhist traditions.
