Mamayev
Mamayev Kurgan is a dominant height overlooking the city of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in Southern Russia. It is the site of a former fierce battle during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II. Today, it is home to a memorial complex commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad heroes.
Description:
Mamayev Kurgan is a strategically important hill due to its commanding view of the city and the Volga River. Control of the Kurgan meant control over vital supply lines. The fighting for the hill was some of the most intense and brutal of the entire battle. The memorial complex, dedicated on October 15, 1967, features numerous monuments, including the iconic "The Motherland Calls" statue, one of the tallest statues in the world. The complex also contains the ruins of the battle, preserved as a testament to the devastation and sacrifice. The site is a major pilgrimage destination and a symbol of Soviet, and later Russian, resistance and heroism during World War II.
