Boltija
Boltija is a genus of trilobites belonging to the family Asaphidae. These extinct marine arthropods lived during the Ordovician period. Boltija are characterized by their relatively large size, smooth exoskeletons, and prominent glabella (the central raised portion of the cephalon or head shield). They are found in various regions around the world, notably in Baltica, the ancient continent from which the genus name is derived. Different species of Boltija are identified based on subtle variations in their cephalic and pygidial (tail shield) features. They are valuable index fossils for biostratigraphy, helping to date Ordovician rock layers. The evolutionary relationships of Boltija within the Asaphidae family and its role in the Ordovician marine ecosystem are subjects of ongoing paleontological research.
