History:

Novaya Ladoga was founded in 1704 by Peter the Great as a shipbuilding yard and a settlement connected to the construction of the Ladoga Canal, which bypassed the treacherous waters of Lake Ladoga for ships traveling between the Svir River and the Neva River. It was initially populated by settlers relocated from other areas, including Old Ladoga.
