Blue Lake (Oregon)
Blue Lake is a lake located in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, United States. There are actually two lakes bearing this name:
-
Blue Lake (Jefferson County): This lake is a deep, glacially-carved lake situated in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. It is known for its exceptionally clear, blue water and challenging access. It's a popular destination for experienced backpackers and hikers seeking remote wilderness experiences. The lake is typically only accessible in late summer and early fall due to snow cover. Camping is permitted in designated areas, and regulations exist to protect the lake's pristine environment.
-
Blue Lake (Multnomah County): This lake is a former oxbow lake of the Columbia River, located near Fairview and Troutdale, Oregon, within the Portland metropolitan area. It is much more accessible and heavily used for recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, and picnicking. Blue Lake Regional Park, managed by Metro, surrounds the lake and offers amenities such as playgrounds, campsites, and trails. This Blue Lake is significantly different in character and origin from the Jefferson County lake, being a relatively shallow, lowland lake with a history of agricultural and industrial influences.
