EMD BL2

The EMD BL2 was a branch line locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1948 to 1949. It was intended as a lightweight, economical locomotive for use on light rail and branch lines, hoping to replace aging steam locomotives on those routes. While visually distinct from its successor, the GP7, it shared many mechanical components. The most notable feature was its carbody design, intended to provide the crew with superior visibility compared to traditional hood units, while also offering access for maintenance. However, this design proved less functional than anticipated, hindering external access to internal components and limiting visibility in certain directions. Ultimately, only 59 BL2 units were built, making it one of EMD's less successful locomotive models. Despite its short production run, the BL2 influenced the design of later locomotives and has become a sought-after model for preservation and operation on heritage railways.
