Eric Gonzalez (lawyer)
Eric Gonzalez is an American lawyer and the current District Attorney of Kings County, New York (Brooklyn).
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Gonzalez is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Michigan Law School. He began his career in the Kings County District Attorney's Office in 1995, working as an Assistant District Attorney. He prosecuted a wide range of cases, including those involving violent crime and narcotics.
Gonzalez rose through the ranks of the District Attorney's Office, eventually serving as Chief Assistant District Attorney under his predecessor, Kenneth Thompson. After Thompson's death in 2016, Gonzalez became Acting District Attorney.
In November 2017, Gonzalez was elected as the District Attorney of Kings County. He was re-elected in 2021.
As District Attorney, Gonzalez has focused on criminal justice reform, including reducing the use of cash bail, diverting individuals with mental health issues into treatment programs, and focusing prosecutorial resources on serious violent crimes. He has also implemented programs aimed at addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system. He has also taken positions and implemented policies around marijuana legalization and prosecution.
