Église de la Madeleine (Besançon)
The Église de la Madeleine is a Roman Catholic church located in Besançon, France. It is situated in the Battant district, on the right bank of the Doubs River. The current church building dates primarily from the 18th century, though it stands on the site of earlier religious structures.
The history of the site extends back to the Middle Ages, with mentions of a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Over time, this chapel was replaced by a larger church. The existing structure is largely the result of rebuilding efforts undertaken in the 18th century, specifically between 1746 and 1766, directed by the architect Nicolas Nicole.
The architecture of the Église de la Madeleine reflects the neoclassical style prevalent during its construction. Its façade is characterized by its restrained ornamentation, featuring columns and a triangular pediment. The interior is relatively simple in design, with a nave and side aisles.
The church has undergone several restorations and modifications throughout its history. It remains an active place of worship and a notable landmark in Besançon.
