Bilastine
Bilastine is a second-generation antihistamine medication used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic urticaria (hives). It is classified as a non-sedating antihistamine, meaning it is less likely to cause drowsiness compared to older antihistamines.
Bilastine selectively antagonizes the histamine H1 receptor. This receptor is involved in mediating allergic reactions. By blocking the action of histamine at the H1 receptor, bilastine reduces symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin rashes.
It is typically administered orally as a tablet. The onset of action is relatively rapid, usually within one hour. Bilastine is generally well-tolerated, and common side effects are mild and infrequent. They can include headache, drowsiness (though less common than with first-generation antihistamines), dizziness, and abdominal pain.
Bilastine is available under various brand names worldwide. It is available by prescription in some countries and over-the-counter in others. It is not recommended for use in children under a certain age (typically 12 years), and its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Drug interactions are possible, particularly with certain medications that inhibit drug transporters. Therefore, it is important to inform a doctor about all medications being taken before starting bilastine.
