Surasa

Surasa is a figure in Hindu mythology, primarily known as a Naga (serpent) mother. She is often described as the mother of all snakes and Nagas, tasked with testing the strength, wisdom, and devotion of various characters.

In the Ramayana, Surasa plays a pivotal role during Hanuman's journey to Lanka. When Hanuman is crossing the ocean, Surasa, acting under the instructions of the gods, appears before him with a monstrous form, barring his passage. She is ordered to test his strength and determination. Surasa opens her mouth wider and wider, attempting to swallow Hanuman. To overcome the challenge, Hanuman cleverly expands his own size to match hers, eventually becoming enormous. Then, in a swift and intelligent maneuver, he suddenly shrinks to a minuscule size, entering and exiting her mouth before she can react. Impressed by his wit and strength, Surasa reveals her true identity and blesses Hanuman, allowing him to continue on his mission.

Surasa's role is significant because it highlights the importance of intelligence, cunning, and devotion in overcoming obstacles. She serves as a reminder that physical strength alone is not always sufficient to achieve success, and that wisdom and devotion are equally crucial. Her encounter with Hanuman is a well-known episode that emphasizes these virtues.

In some variations of the Ramayana and other Hindu texts, Surasa is mentioned in different contexts, but her role as a mother of Nagas and a tester of strength and character remains consistent.
