Archippus (poet)

Archippus was a poet of the Old Comedy during the late 5th century BC. He was a contemporary of Aristophanes and other notable comic playwrights of the time. Details about his life are scant, and what we know is primarily derived from fragments of his plays and mentions in the works of other authors.

His plays, like those of his contemporaries, were characterized by satirical commentary on Athenian society, politics, and individuals. They often featured irreverent humor, witty dialogue, and fantastical elements. While none of his plays survive in their entirety, numerous fragments are preserved, offering glimpses into his comedic style and the topics he addressed.

Some titles of his plays known from fragments and other sources include: Amphitryon, Ichthyes (Fish), and Ploutos. These fragments suggest he engaged with themes familiar to Old Comedy, such as mythological parody and social critique.

The Suda, a 10th-century Byzantine encyclopedia, mentions Archippus and lists him among the prominent poets of the Old Comedy. This attestation further confirms his significance in the historical context of Athenian drama. However, the limited evidence available makes a comprehensive understanding of his dramatic output challenging. His work, as evidenced by the surviving fragments, provides valuable insights into the vibrant and often politically charged world of Athenian comedy.
