2013 Birthday Honours (New Zealand)
The 2013 Birthday Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II in her right as Queen of New Zealand to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders and others. They were announced on 3 June 2013, and celebrated the Queen's official birthday.
The honours list was divided into general honours and distinguished service decorations. General honours are awarded for services to the community or to a particular field of endeavour, while distinguished service decorations are awarded for gallantry or meritorious service in specific fields, such as the armed forces or police.
The main honours were the appointment of Companions of the Queen's Service Order (QSO), Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM), Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), and the awarding of the Queen's Service Medal (QSM). Individuals could also receive decorations for bravery or long service and good conduct.
The recipients represented a broad range of fields, including business, community service, education, the arts, and sports. The honours recognised both well-known figures and those who had made significant contributions quietly and often without public recognition.
Recipients were publicly gazetted and formally invested with their insignia at investiture ceremonies presided over by the Governor-General of New Zealand. The awards are a significant part of New Zealand's honours system, acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of individuals to the nation.
