Decani

Decani (Serbian Cyrillic: Дечани) refers primarily to the Visoki Dečani monastery (Високи Дечани), a major Serbian Orthodox monastery located near the town of Dečan in Kosovo. Founded in the early 14th century by King Stefan Uroš III of Serbia, and completed by his son Stefan Dušan, Visoki Dečani is renowned for its remarkably preserved frescoes, its architecture blending Byzantine and Western Romanesque styles, and its extensive collection of early Serbian manuscripts.

The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed as part of the "Medieval Monuments in Kosovo" since 2004. Its inclusion on the list has been subject to political controversy, particularly concerning its security and the status of Kosovo.

The name "Decani" can also refer more generally to the surrounding geographic area, the town of Dečan itself, and individuals originating from that region. The monastery, however, remains the most prominent association with the term. Visoki Dečani has played a significant role in Serbian history, culture, and religion, serving as a center of learning and pilgrimage for centuries.
