Church of Saint George (Reichenau)

The Church of Saint George is a Romanesque church located on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance, Germany. Specifically, it is situated in the district of Oberzell. This church is one of the three medieval churches on the island, which was once a significant monastic center and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Church of Saint George is most renowned for its Ottonian murals dating back to around 1000 AD. These murals depict scenes from the miracles of Christ and represent some of the best-preserved examples of early medieval painting north of the Alps. The original purpose of these murals was likely didactic, intended to instruct the largely illiterate population.

Architecturally, the church is a relatively simple basilica structure. Over the centuries, it has undergone several alterations and restorations. While the murals remain the most significant feature, the church itself represents a crucial part of the island's rich history and its role as a prominent religious and cultural center during the Early Middle Ages. The church continues to function as a place of worship today.
