2007 WD5
2007 WD5 is a small near-Earth asteroid discovered on November 20, 2007, by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. It is classified as an Apollo asteroid, meaning its orbit crosses the Earth's orbit.
The asteroid gained attention in late 2007 when calculations indicated a potential, though highly improbable, impact with Mars on January 30, 2008. Initial estimates suggested a relatively high probability of impact, which was subsequently revised downward as more observational data became available.
Further observations refined the asteroid's trajectory, ultimately ruling out any possibility of an impact with Mars in 2008. The analysis indicated that 2007 WD5 would safely pass by Mars at a distance significantly greater than the Martian radius.
The asteroid's size is estimated to be approximately 50 meters in diameter. Due to its relatively small size and the low probability of any significant future Earth impacts, 2007 WD5 is no longer considered a significant threat. It serves as an example of how astronomical observations and orbit calculations can be used to assess and refine the impact risks posed by near-Earth objects.
