Photinia

Photinia is a genus of approximately 60 species of evergreen shrubs and small trees in the family Rosaceae, native to warm temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and south to India and Thailand.

Description

Photinias are generally medium to large shrubs, reaching heights of 4-15 meters. They are characterized by their glossy, often brightly colored, new foliage, which matures to a darker green. The leaves are typically alternate, ovate to lanceolate, and serrated along the margins.

The flowers are small, white, and produced in dense corymbs or panicles. The scent of the flowers is sometimes considered unpleasant by some people. The fruit is a small pome, red or purplish-black in color, containing one to several seeds.

Cultivation and Uses

Several species of Photinia are popular ornamental plants, valued for their vibrant foliage, which provides year-round interest. They are commonly used in hedges, screens, and as specimen plants in gardens and parks. Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' is a particularly widely cultivated hybrid, known for its bright red new growth.

Photinias are relatively easy to grow and tolerate a wide range of conditions, but they prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. They are also relatively resistant to pests and diseases. Regular pruning can help to maintain their shape and encourage new growth.

Species

Some notable species of Photinia include:

  • Photinia davidiana
  • Photinia glabra
  • Photinia serratifolia
  • Photinia villosa

Ecology

Photinias provide food and shelter for various wildlife, including birds and insects. Their fruits are an important food source for birds in the autumn and winter.

Concerns

In some regions, particularly North America, Photinia species are susceptible to the fungal disease Entomosporium leaf spot, which can cause significant defoliation and weaken the plants. Selecting resistant cultivars and implementing proper cultural practices can help to manage this disease.
