Modron

Modron are lawful neutral constructs native to the plane of Mechanus, also known as the Plane of Order. They are rigidly hierarchical beings, existing to maintain the Great Machine that is the plane itself. Individual modrons are not individuals in the common sense; they are extensions of the whole, acting according to their designated role and responding to orders from higher-ranking modrons.

Hierarchy and Structure: The modron society is a strict and unyielding hierarchy, based on numerical rank and function. The lowest modrons are the monodrones, followed by duodrones, and so on up through tridrones, quadrones, pentadrones, hexadrones, heptadrones, octons, nonatons, decatons, hendecatons, dodecatons, and finally, the powerful primus. Each level commands those below it, delegating tasks and ensuring the smooth operation of Mechanus. Advancement through the ranks is rare and typically occurs only when a higher-ranking modron is destroyed or reassigned.

Purpose and Function: The primary purpose of modrons is to maintain the order and stability of Mechanus. This involves a variety of tasks, from simple maintenance and repair to complex calculations and planning. Modrons are tireless and unwavering in their dedication to their duties, performing their assigned tasks with perfect precision and efficiency. They are not capable of independent thought or initiative, but they are extremely good at following instructions.

Appearance: Modrons vary in appearance depending on their rank. Monodrones are simple cubes with a single eye, while higher-ranking modrons have more complex shapes and features, often with multiple limbs, eyes, and tools. Their bodies are typically made of metal and other durable materials.

Language and Communication: Modrons communicate through a combination of telepathy and simple commands. They do not possess individual voices or personalities, but they are capable of transmitting information and receiving orders from higher-ranking modrons.

Relationship with Other Planes and Beings: Modrons rarely leave Mechanus, and when they do, it is usually on specific missions assigned by primus. They have little understanding of or interest in the affairs of other planes or beings. They view anything that disrupts order as a threat and will attempt to neutralize it, often without regard for individual lives or consequences. Encounters with modrons are generally dangerous, as they are completely unyielding and follow their orders to the letter.
