Francis Newton (golfer)
Francis Newton (January 3, 1874 – December 3, 1956) was an American amateur golfer. He is best known for winning the 1905 U.S. Amateur Championship.
Newton was born in Urbana, Illinois. He attended Princeton University, where he was a member of the golf team. He finished runner-up in the 1896 Intercollegiate Championship.
Newton played in seven U.S. Amateur Championships. His victory in 1905, held at the Chicago Golf Club, was a significant achievement in his career. He defeated Eben Byers in the final.
Newton also participated in the U.S. Open on several occasions. His highest finish was a tie for 11th place in 1903. He was a member of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association and won their amateur title in 1903 and 1909.
Beyond his playing career, Newton remained involved in golf. He served as an officer for various golf organizations and was respected for his knowledge of the game. He died in 1956 in Greenwich, Connecticut.
