Brushcutter (garden tool)

A brushcutter, also known as a clearing saw or brush saw, is a powered gardening tool used for cutting through dense vegetation such as thick grass, weeds, bushes, and small trees. It is typically a handheld machine powered by a gasoline engine or an electric motor (corded or cordless).

Brushcutters are distinguished from string trimmers (weed whackers) primarily by their use of metal blades rather than nylon string. Blades can range in type, including:

  • Straight Blades: Commonly used for general cutting and clearing.
  • Brush Blades: Heavier-duty blades designed for thicker brush and small saplings. These often have multiple teeth.
  • Chisel Tooth Blades: Aggressive blades suitable for cutting woody material.

The cutting head is typically attached to a long shaft, often with a loop handle or bicycle-style handlebars to provide the user with control and leverage. A harness or shoulder strap is often used to distribute the weight of the machine and reduce fatigue during extended use.

Compared to string trimmers, brushcutters are more powerful and effective for tackling tough vegetation. However, they also require greater operator skill and awareness due to the increased risk of injury from the rotating blade. Safety precautions when operating a brushcutter include wearing eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
