Benihana (skateboarding)

The Benihana is a skateboarding trick where the rider grabs the tail of the board with their front hand while extending their legs outwards, creating the appearance of sitting on the board in mid-air. It is generally considered an intermediate trick.

The trick is typically performed out of a transition, such as a quarterpipe or bank, but can also be executed on flat ground. The rider initiates the trick by ollieing and then reaching down to grab the tail with their leading hand (the hand corresponding to their front foot). Simultaneously, the rider extends both legs away from the board.

Maintaining balance and control while grabbing the tail and extending the legs requires coordination and core strength. The trick is completed by releasing the tail, bringing the feet back over the board, and landing smoothly.

The origin of the name "Benihana" is debated. One popular explanation links it to the Japanese restaurant chain of the same name, suggesting that the trick's presentation resembles the way chefs theatrically prepare food at Benihana tables.
