Brat Tor
Brat Tor is a granite tor located on Dartmoor in Devon, England. It is situated to the north-west of Lydford, close to the village of Brentor. The tor is visually prominent, largely due to the small medieval church, St. Michael de Rupe, which stands atop it.
The name "Brat Tor" is believed to derive from the Old English "brant tor," meaning "steep tor." This accurately describes the tor's steep, rocky slopes.
St. Michael de Rupe church, the main landmark associated with Brat Tor, dates back to the 13th century, although some believe there may have been an earlier religious site on the tor. Its elevated position provided a prominent landmark for travelers and possibly served a defensive function.
Brat Tor is a popular hiking destination, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Dartmoor landscape. The ascent to the summit, while relatively short, can be challenging due to the steep and uneven terrain. The site is open to the public and managed in conjunction with English Heritage who provide conservation to the historical church.
