BRCA1P1

BRCA1P1 is a pseudogene related to the BRCA1 (Breast Cancer 1, early onset) gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they cannot produce a protein product due to various mutations, such as frameshift mutations, premature stop codons, or loss of promoter regions.

BRCA1P1 is located on human chromosome 17, near the functional BRCA1 gene. Due to its sequence similarity to BRCA1, it's hypothesized that BRCA1P1 arose through duplication and subsequent mutation of the ancestral BRCA1 gene.

While BRCA1P1 itself is not translated into a protein, studies have investigated its potential role in regulating the expression of its functional counterpart, BRCA1. Some research suggests that pseudogenes can influence gene expression through mechanisms like RNA interference or by acting as decoys for regulatory proteins. However, the specific functional significance of BRCA1P1 in regulating BRCA1, if any, remains a subject of ongoing research. Further investigation is needed to fully elucidate its role within the genome.
