Denton was called to the bar at Gray's Inn. He entered Parliament in 1705, representing Buckingham until 1713, and then for Aylesbury from 1713 to 1722. He distinguished himself as a Whig politician and a respected legal mind.

In 1722, he was appointed a judge of the Court of Common Pleas, a position he held until his death in 1734.
