Tug Fork

The Tug Fork is a 165.8-mile-long (266.8 km) tributary of the Big Sandy River, forming part of the boundary between West Virginia and Kentucky in the United States. Originating in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern West Virginia, it flows generally northwest, joining the Levisa Fork to form the Big Sandy River at Louisa, Kentucky.

The Tug Fork valley has historically been a significant coal mining region, influencing the economic and cultural landscape of the area. The river also played a central role in the Hatfield-McCoy feud, a notorious family conflict that spanned decades.

The river's name is believed to derive from an incident in the early 18th century when explorers lost a tug rope while attempting to cross it.
