Arthur Mayo (VC)

Arthur Mayo (born 17 October 1830, died 30 December 1861) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Mayo was born in Puckaun, County Tipperary, Ireland. He served as a Surgeon with the Bengal Medical Establishment in the Bengal Army during the Indian Mutiny.

He was awarded the VC for his actions on 22 January 1858 at Rooyah, India. His citation reads:

"For conspicuous courage and devotion to his duty, in having remained in the field, during the action of Rooyah, on the 15th April, 1858, in immediate attendance on the wounded, under a close and heavy fire from the enemy. Also for subsequently remaining in charge of the wounded, amidst a disorganized rabble, after the retreat of the force, on the 22nd January, 1858."

Mayo died in Meerut, India, at the age of 31 and is buried in Meerut New Cemetery. His Victoria Cross is held by the Army Medical Services Museum, Keogh Barracks, Ash Vale, Aldershot.
