Medal of Merit (Denmark)

The Medal of Merit (Danish: Fortjenstmedaljen) is a Danish medal established on May 17, 1968, by King Frederik IX. It is awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution to Danish art, science, and literature, or who have performed exceptional service to the state.

The medal is awarded sparingly and represents a high level of recognition within Danish society. Recommendations for the award are typically made by governmental departments, institutions, or other relevant organizations, and the final decision rests with the monarch.

The Medal of Merit exists in two grades: gold and silver. The gold medal is awarded for particularly outstanding achievements, while the silver medal is given for meritorious service. The medal's design features the monarch's portrait on one side and the royal crown on the other.

The Medal of Merit should not be confused with the Medal of Honour awarded by the Danish government, which recognises bravery and sacrifice. The Medal of Merit specifically acknowledges contributions to cultural and societal betterment.
