Buffalo Creek (Juniata River tributary)
Buffalo Creek is a stream located in central Pennsylvania, United States. It is a tributary of the Juniata River, which is itself a major tributary of the Susquehanna River. Buffalo Creek flows generally eastward through Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.
The creek is primarily fed by runoff and groundwater discharge from the surrounding forested hills and agricultural lands. Its watershed encompasses a rural area characterized by rolling hills and mixed land use.
While not a major waterway in terms of size or navigation, Buffalo Creek plays a role in the local ecosystem, providing habitat for various aquatic species. It is also used for recreational activities such as fishing and kayaking, particularly during periods of sufficient water flow. The stream's water quality is impacted by agricultural runoff and other non-point source pollution, a common challenge for streams in agricultural regions. Efforts are underway to improve water quality through best management practices implemented by local landowners and conservation organizations.
