Émilie (opera)
Émilie is a monodrama in one act by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. The libretto is by Amin Maalouf, based on the life and writings of the 18th-century French mathematician and physicist Émilie du Châtelet. The opera explores the final moments and intellectual passions of Émilie as she reflects on love, science, and mortality.
The opera is scored for solo soprano, orchestra, and electronics. It places significant demands on the soprano, requiring a wide vocal range and the ability to convey Émilie's complex emotional and intellectual states. The orchestral writing is characteristic of Saariaho's style, employing shimmering textures and evocative sonorities to create a rich and immersive soundscape. The electronics further enhance the atmosphere, adding layers of depth and nuance to the musical fabric.
Émilie was commissioned by the Opéra de Lyon and premiered on March 1, 2010, with soprano Karita Mattila in the title role. The work has been generally well-received, praised for its compelling portrayal of a fascinating historical figure and for its innovative musical language. Productions of Émilie have been staged internationally, solidifying its place in the contemporary opera repertoire. The opera typically runs approximately 65-75 minutes.
