Hyas (crab)

Hyas is a genus of crabs in the family Oregoniidae. These crabs are found in cold waters, primarily in the Arctic and North Pacific Oceans, and also extending down into more temperate regions of the Atlantic.

Description: Hyas crabs are characterized by their roughly triangular or pear-shaped carapace (shell). They are typically slow-moving and often heavily camouflaged with algae, sponges, and other marine organisms. The rostrum, the area between the eyes, is often pointed. They possess long, slender legs relative to their body size. Specific characteristics vary between species within the Hyas genus.

Species: Some notable species within the genus Hyas include:

  • Hyas araneus (Great Spider Crab)
  • Hyas coarctatus (Toad Crab)
  • Hyas lyratus (Lyre Crab)

Habitat and Distribution: Hyas crabs generally inhabit shallow, rocky or sandy bottoms, but can also be found in deeper waters. Their distribution corresponds to colder regions, as described above, where they play a role in benthic ecosystems.

Ecology: Hyas crabs are scavengers and predators, feeding on a variety of invertebrates and organic matter. They are, in turn, preyed upon by larger fish, marine mammals, and birds. Their cryptic coloration helps them avoid predation.

Life Cycle: The life cycle of Hyas crabs involves a series of larval stages before metamorphosing into juvenile crabs. Mating typically occurs after the female molts, when her shell is soft.
