Amarapuri

Amarapuri (also sometimes spelled Amravati or Amarpura) refers to a sacred city or celestial abode in Hindu and Jain cosmology. It is often understood as the capital city of the god Indra, the king of the Devas (gods). The term carries a strong connotation of prosperity, divinity, and eternal bliss.

The name Amarapuri is derived from the Sanskrit words "Amara" meaning immortal, and "Puri" meaning city or abode. Therefore, Amarapuri literally translates to "City of Immortals."

In Hindu scriptures, Amarapuri is described as a magnificent city, adorned with gold and jewels, and inhabited by divine beings, celestial nymphs (Apsaras), and Gandharvas (celestial musicians). It is a place of unparalleled beauty and joy, free from suffering and death. Entrance to Amarapuri is typically reserved for those who have lived virtuous lives and accumulated significant merit.

While primarily associated with Indra's realm, the concept of Amarapuri can also be seen as a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment and liberation (moksha). The pursuit of dharma (righteousness) and good karma is often seen as a pathway towards achieving a state of existence akin to that of Amarapuri.

Different Hindu texts offer varying descriptions of Amarapuri's exact location and characteristics. It is generally considered to be located in the higher realms of the cosmos, beyond the earthly plane.
