Alexander Thom (surgeon)
Alexander Thom (1889-1963) was a Scottish surgeon known for his contributions to the surgical treatment of peptic ulcers and his role in medical education. He trained at the University of Glasgow, graduating MB ChB in 1911 and MD in 1920. He held positions at the Royal Infirmary of Glasgow, becoming a consultant surgeon. He was a lecturer in clinical surgery at the University of Glasgow, influencing generations of medical students. His surgical practice focused primarily on the gastrointestinal tract, with a particular emphasis on the surgical management of peptic ulcer disease, a common ailment during his time. His contributions included refinements to surgical techniques and a focus on meticulous patient care. Beyond his surgical skill, Thom was known for his dedication to teaching and his commitment to the well-being of his patients. He retired in 1954.
