Farmers' Party (Ireland)

The Farmers' Party was a political party in Ireland active during the 1920s and early 1930s. It represented the interests of farmers, particularly those who were smallholders and felt underrepresented by the larger political parties of the time. Its emergence was largely driven by the economic hardships faced by the agricultural sector in the aftermath of World War I and during the Great Depression.

The party advocated for policies aimed at supporting Irish agriculture, including fair prices for farm produce, improved access to credit, and relief from rates (local property taxes). It also often took a protectionist stance, favoring tariffs and other measures to protect Irish farmers from foreign competition. The Farmers' Party was largely based in rural areas and drew its support from farmers, agricultural labourers, and those involved in related industries.

The party achieved its greatest electoral success in the 1920s, winning a significant number of seats in Dáil Éireann (the Irish parliament). Its influence gradually waned in the 1930s as larger parties, particularly Fianna Fáil, adopted policies more favorable to farmers, effectively absorbing much of its support base. The Farmers' Party eventually faded into obscurity, ceasing to be a significant force in Irish politics. While several individual politicians identified as farmer-friendly continued to be elected, the specifically named party did not endure.
