8 (2008 film)
8 is a 2008 short film compilation commissioned by the ONE Campaign to raise awareness about the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals were adopted by world leaders in 2000 with the aim of reducing global poverty by 2015.
Each of the eight segments was directed by a different filmmaker and focuses on one of the eight MDGs. The directors involved were: Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Gael García Bernal, Gus Van Sant, Jan Kounen, Gaspar Noé, Abderrahmane Sissako, and Wim Wenders.
The eight segments and the Millennium Development Goals they represent are:
- Mira Nair: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
- Jane Campion: Achieve universal primary education.
- Gael García Bernal: Promote gender equality and empower women.
- Gus Van Sant: Reduce child mortality.
- Jan Kounen: Improve maternal health.
- Gaspar Noé: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
- Abderrahmane Sissako: Ensure environmental sustainability.
- Wim Wenders: Develop a global partnership for development.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2008. Its aim was to inspire action and hold world leaders accountable for meeting the MDGs. The segments vary significantly in style and approach, reflecting the individual directors' cinematic vision and the complexities of the issues addressed.
