The event was headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between then-champion Chuck Liddell and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. This was a rematch of their Pride Fighting Championships bout in 2003, which Jackson won.

The card also featured a heavyweight bout between Mirko Cro Cop and Gabriel Gonzaga, and a welterweight fight between Karo Parisyan and Josh Burkman. UFC 71 was broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States and Canada.
