USS Benner (DD-807)

USS Benner (DD-807) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy. She was named for Lieutenant Commander Andrew Jackson Benner, Jr., who was killed in action during the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Benner was laid down on 10 May 1944 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works; launched on 29 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. A. J. Benner, Jr., widow of Lieutenant Commander Benner; and commissioned on 13 December 1944, Commander R. L. Nolan in command.

Following shakedown in the Caribbean, Benner transited the Panama Canal and joined the Pacific Fleet, arriving at Pearl Harbor in March 1945. She then joined Task Force 58 and participated in operations in the Okinawa area, including screening duties and providing gunfire support. She also took part in raids on the Japanese home islands.

After the war, Benner participated in occupation duties in Japan. She returned to the United States in 1946 and was decommissioned in July of that year, entering the Pacific Reserve Fleet.

Benner was recommissioned in March 1951 for service during the Korean War. She participated in blockade duties and provided gunfire support to United Nations forces. After the Korean War, she continued to serve with the Pacific Fleet, participating in various exercises and deployments.

In 1962, Benner underwent a Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) I conversion, which included upgrades to her radar, sonar, and weapons systems, including the addition of ASROC (Anti-Submarine Rocket) launchers. She continued to serve in the Pacific Fleet, including deployments to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, providing naval gunfire support and participating in search and rescue operations.

Benner was decommissioned for the final time in February 1970 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register. She was sold for scrap in 1971.

Benner received two battle stars for her service in World War II, four battle stars for her service in the Korean War, and five battle stars for her service in the Vietnam War.
