Merlion Cup (basketball)
The Merlion Cup is an international invitational basketball tournament held in Singapore. It is generally organized by Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS). The tournament typically features national teams and club teams from across Asia and Oceania.
The Merlion Cup has a history stretching back several decades, although it has not been held continuously throughout that time. It has served as a valuable platform for teams to gain international exposure, develop their players, and compete against diverse styles of basketball. The tournament format can vary from year to year, but often involves a round-robin stage followed by knockout rounds.
Past editions of the Merlion Cup have included teams from countries such as China, South Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The tournament's name refers to the Merlion, a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, which is a national symbol of Singapore.
