Astaranga
Astaranga is a coastal town and beach located in the Puri district of the Indian state of Odisha. Situated on the Bay of Bengal coast, it is approximately 60 kilometers east of the district headquarters, Puri.
The name "Astaranga" is derived from two Sanskrit words: 'Asta', meaning eight, and 'Ranga', meaning color. This name is often attributed to the beach's picturesque sunsets, where the sky is said to display a multitude of colors, or potentially referring to variations in the sea's appearance throughout the day.
Historically, Astaranga was known as a port town with some historical significance, although its prominence as a major port has diminished over time. Today, it is primarily known for its long, relatively untouched beach and its role as a fishing center. The local economy largely depends on fishing activities.
The beach at Astaranga is a popular destination for observing marine life, particularly Olive Ridley sea turtles, which sometimes nest on the coast in the vicinity. The area is also ecologically sensitive and efforts are made for coastal conservation.
Due to its scenic beauty, especially the sunsets, Astaranga is gaining recognition as a tourist spot, offering a tranquil alternative to more crowded beaches. Nearby attractions include the mouth of the Devi River.
