Edwin Lascelles (MP for Ripon)
Edwin Lascelles (1713-1795) was a British Member of Parliament. He is best known as the wealthy owner of Harewood House and its associated estate in Yorkshire, England.
Lascelles represented the constituency of Ripon in the House of Commons for several terms, from 1744 to 1790. His family, the Lascelles, had significant political influence in the region and a history of representing Ripon. While in Parliament, Lascelles was not known as a particularly active or vocal member, focusing instead on managing his extensive landholdings and overseeing the construction and furnishing of Harewood House.
The wealth that allowed Lascelles to build Harewood House was derived, in part, from his family's involvement in the West Indies sugar trade and their ownership of plantations, which relied heavily on enslaved labor. This aspect of his family's history has become the subject of increased scrutiny in recent years.
Upon his death in 1795, without a direct heir, the Harewood estate passed to his cousin Edward Lascelles, who was created Baron Harewood in 1796.
