Ailm
Ailm (pronounced /ˈalʲɪmʲ/) is the Irish name for the Scots Pine tree ( Pinus sylvestris). It is also a letter in the Ogham alphabet, representing the sound [a].
In the Ogham system, Ailm belongs to the first aicme (family or group) which is associated with the letter B. Its position in the alphabet is the fourth letter.
Symbolically, Ailm is associated with clarity, perspective, and resilience, mirroring the Scots Pine's ability to thrive in harsh environments. Some interpretations associate it with looking at the bigger picture, overcoming obstacles, and having foresight.
The Scots Pine holds cultural significance in Ireland and Scotland. It was once much more widespread than it is today and remnants of ancient Caledonian pine forests still exist. The tree itself is associated with longevity, strength, and providing shelter.
