63rd Battalion (Edmonton), CEF

The 63rd Battalion (Edmonton), CEF was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. Authorized on 20 April 1915 and mobilized at Edmonton, Alberta, the battalion recruited primarily throughout Military District No. 13.

The 63rd Battalion sailed for Great Britain on 22 April 1916, aboard the Empress of Britain. Upon arrival, the battalion was initially stationed at Shorncliffe Camp for training.

On 7 July 1916, the 63rd Battalion was absorbed into the 9th Reserve Battalion, CEF. Consequently, it did not serve as an independent unit at the front. Soldiers of the 63rd Battalion were used as reinforcements for other Canadian units fighting in France and Flanders.

The battalion was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel W.A. Griesbach from 22 April 1916 to 7 July 1916.

The 63rd Battalion (Edmonton), CEF, was disbanded on 11 April 1917.

The perpetuation of the 63rd Battalion (Edmonton), CEF, was assigned to the South Alberta Regiment.
