29th Battalion (New Zealand)

The 29th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the New Zealand Military Forces, which served during the Second World War. Formed in 1940, it was part of the 2nd New Zealand Division and saw extensive action in Greece, Crete, North Africa, and Italy.

Formation and Organisation

The battalion was raised as part of the mobilization effort following New Zealand's entry into the war. It was composed primarily of volunteers and organized along standard infantry battalion lines, with rifle companies, support companies (machine gun, mortar, and anti-tank), and a headquarters company.

Operational History

  • Greece and Crete: The 29th Battalion's first major deployment was to Greece in 1941, as part of the Allied effort to defend the country against German invasion. Following the rapid German advance, the battalion participated in the fighting retreat and subsequent evacuation to Crete. On Crete, the battalion fought in the Battle of Crete against German airborne forces. After heavy fighting and significant casualties, the remaining elements of the battalion were evacuated.

  • North Africa: Following the evacuation from Crete, the 29th Battalion was reformed and redeployed to North Africa. It participated in several key battles, including the Second Battle of El Alamein, where the battalion played a crucial role in breaking through the Axis lines. It also fought in subsequent engagements during the pursuit of the retreating Axis forces across Libya and Tunisia.

  • Italy: In 1943, the 29th Battalion was transferred to Italy as part of the Allied invasion. It participated in the difficult and protracted fighting up the Italian peninsula, including battles along the Sangro River and at Cassino. The battalion continued to fight throughout the Italian campaign until the end of the war in 1945.

Disbandment

Following the end of the Second World War, the 29th Battalion was disbanded. Its personnel were repatriated to New Zealand.
