John Stokes (Conservative politician)
John Stokes (born 23 July 1917, died 8 June 2003) was a British Conservative politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Ipswich from 1970 to 1974 and then for Halesowen and Stourbridge from 1974 to 1992.
Stokes was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and Queen's College, Oxford. Before entering politics, he worked in industry.
In Parliament, Stokes was known for his strongly traditionalist and right-wing views. He was a staunch advocate for traditional British values and institutions, and was often associated with the Conservative Monday Club. He was a vocal opponent of immigration and supported the retention of capital punishment. He was also a Eurosceptic, critical of the growing powers of the European Economic Community (EEC), later the European Union.
After retiring from Parliament in 1992, Stokes remained active in conservative circles. His views and outspoken nature often generated controversy throughout his political career. He is remembered as a prominent figure on the right wing of the Conservative Party during his time in Parliament.
