Welbore Ellis (bishop)

Welbore Ellis (1734 – 1 December 1825) was an Irish clergyman of the Church of Ireland, who served as the Bishop of Kildare from 1802 to 1806, and subsequently as the Bishop of Meath from 1806 until his death in 1825.

Born in Ireland, he was the son of Reverend Thomas Ellis and his wife, Anne Blennerhassett. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1754. He held several clerical positions before his episcopal appointments, including rector of various parishes.

Ellis was consecrated Bishop of Kildare on 21 November 1802. His tenure there was relatively short. On 14 June 1806, he was translated to the bishopric of Meath, a more prestigious and lucrative position. He remained Bishop of Meath for nearly two decades, until his death at the age of 91. He was known as a conscientious and respected member of the Irish ecclesiastical establishment.
